Marbella is a city on the beach, and most tourists visit to spend some time in the sea. However, remember to dress appropriately depending on where you are. It’s best to keep your swimwear just for the beach and pool.
If you’re planning on exploring the nearby town of Malaga, see if you can get your hands on a Malaga Pass, which will offer you discounts on many cultural highlights and queue jump options.
Watch out for bread on your table – this usually comes with a charge. If you don’t fancy it, ask a waiter to take it away.
July and August are the hottest months, but also the busiest. Try a slightly out of season stay if you want to appreciate the city when it’s more peaceful.
Most museums are close to each other. You can walk from one to the next, and stop off for some well-deserved tapas in between.
Plan your activities around the sun. During the hottest parts of the day, why not try an indoor activity such as visiting an art gallery?

Don’t get us wrong, a trip to Marbella almost always guarantees you sunny weather, but here are some activities that you can do come rain or shine – just in case!
Go car crazy
There’s a car museum not far from Marbella – how could we not recommend that?! An astounding collection of colourfully restored vintage vehicles live in the art deco home of Automobile and Fashion.
Shop ‘til you drop
The Plaza Mayor Leisure Centre is the perfect place to spend some time if the weather isn’t on your side. There’s also a cinema and a bowling complex to ensure you are thoroughly entertained. Remember to bring an umbrella though, as the walkway between shops isn’t covered.
Embrace the water
If it’s raining, why not head to a water park? There are quite a few in the area, all of which are easy to get to with a rental car.
Get to know the local wildlife
El Refugio del Burrito is a rescue centre for donkeys (not burritos!). This donkey sanctuary is free to visit, and houses around 350 donkeys and mules. A great day out, especially if you’ve got kids.

Discover the old town
Marbella is definitely the sort of place where massages on the oceanfront, refreshing watermelon cocktails and retro ice-cream parlours should be part of the itinerary. To the outsider it may appear superficial, but there’s another side to the town just waiting to be discovered.
For respite from the all-night parties and long days on the beach, the Old Town becomes temptingly attractive. Tropical plants and clementine-coloured parasols in Orange Square provide shelter and a welcome interlude from the sun-scorched sand. The meandering backstreets are also waiting patiently, if you fancy a simple stroll about town.
