Depending on your point of view, Darwin presides as the gateway to Australia or to Asia.
Nestled on the top of the continent next to the Timor Sea, the capital of Australian’s Northern Territory is closer to the string of islands that makes up Indonesia than it is to Sydney. It hosts a fusion of international cultures and beach vibes that cultivate a continuous festival atmosphere.
Given that the tropical city is named after Charles Darwin, you can expect to find some neat wildlife and captivating landscapes close by. Grab your rental and hit the road for a trip to Litchfield National Park, where waterfalls run into cool swimming holes. Alternatively, take a road trip to Kakadu National Park to view some notable displays of ancient Aboriginal rock art.
Sights to see
Darwin is geographically nearer to Jakarta than Sydney, and this close proximity to Asia is reflected in Darwin’s diverse population and its many restaurants of various Asian cuisines. The city is near to plenty of excellent beaches with warm clear waters perfect for swimming (though it’s best to avoid this in the rainy season when the poisonous box jellyfish appears in the shallows). For more cultural activities, the Museum and Art gallery of the Northern Territory is a great place to view Aboriginal art and some excellent artefacts from the Pacific and Southern Asia. Another fascinating and unique museum is the Australian Pearling Exhibition at the Darwin Wharf Precinct. Darwin also has some quirky attractions well worth a visit. The ‘Aquascene’ fish feeding, where thousands of fish appear in the shallows at high tide to be fed by hand, is a favourite with kids. Crocodylus Park is a wonderful well-maintained wildlife park full of some enormous saltwater crocodiles, the largest reptiles on the planet that stalk the more remote rivers of the Northern Territory.
Darwin: Discover more
Rent a car in Darwin and you could venture down the coastline to some of the more secluded and serene beaches or explore the surrounding hills and rainforests. Head down to the East Point Reserve to watch the wallabies feed at dusk and swim in the saltwater lake, which thankfully remains jellyfish free all year round!
