Things to do in Carlisle
Originally a Celtic settlement, Carlisle has a history of habitation stretching back two thousand years. It has often figured in the bloody wars between England and Scotland, with William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and eventually Bonnie Prince Charlie all attempting to take over this important strategic stronghold. Today, however, Carlisle is far less chaotic! The city centre around Green Market is filled with excellent shops, bars and restaurants and there are several wonderful museums and galleries to explore. Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery offers a fascinating insight into local history, including an exhibit on catapults and ancient weaponry. It’s also worth visiting the striking Carlisle Cathedral. Although it has suffered much damage and rebuilding since its construction in 1122, it still retains many of its original features and makes for an impressive visit.
