Hire a car in Toulouse
Toulouse is enchanting, with its blushing facades and urban elegance.
Christened La Ville Rose because of its coral coloured churches and storefronts, it once controlled much of southern France. Today, Toulouse is one of the largest university centres in the country, with a student population enforcing a lively and innovative culture. It is also the capital of France’s air and space industry.
The Garonne River cuts through its core, while 19th century boulavards circle the city’s perimeter. Situated in the Occitanie Region, home to eight different UNESCO sites, renting a car is helpful to see the area.

Into the mountains
Cirque de Gavarnie
In the heart of the Pyrenees mountain range, Cirque de Gavarnie is a stunning rock amphitheatre. Formed by an old glacial erosion, the cirque has been honoured as both a natural and cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site, a rare double distinction.
Hugging the French/ Spanish border, the steep-sided hollow is a surreal expanse. Hiking along the dirt trails and rocky inclines will take you past some of the most impressive waterfalls in Europe – including the largest – plus you’ll find Mont Perdu, the third highest peak in the Pyrenees, at 3,352 metres high.
You can easily reach the area by car from Toulouse. The drive to Gavarnie, which is beautifully scenic in its own right, is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes – though plan for longer if you enjoy stopping along the way for photos.

Albi
For a long time, Albi was off the grid, but that changed when it was listed as a UNESCO heritage site in 2010. Located on the Tarn River, Albi is an hour’s drive from Toulouse.
The whole city is built from local Languedoc red and orange brick in a southern French Gothic style. Even the town’s 13th century cathedral, which dominates the skyline, is built of brick rather than stone. That makes it the only Gothic cathedral built of brick and the largest brick building in Europe.
