Hire a car in Bologna
Bologna is a city of many distinguished characteristics and celebrated legacies.
As Italy’s food capital and home to the world’s oldest university, it is well-known as both la grassa (the fat one) and la dotta (the learned one). But if that wasn’t enough, the city is also la rossa (the red one), a nickname hinting at its red-hued terracotta medieval buildings.
With fewer tourists than its neighbouring Tuscany region, the city makes a fine base from which to rent a car and explore Italy’s Emilia Romagna region.

Local tips
Italian lifestyle
Breakfast lingers on all morning, with lunch beginning around 1pm. Aperitivo – happy hour – starts at 6 or 7pm with dinner later in the evening. Though there’s a good chance you’ll have eaten enough to not need dinner.
Bologna Welcome Card
If you’re interested in hitting up as many of the city’s museums as possible, we recommend buying either a two or three day welcome card. It will grant you free entry and discounts to Bologna’s attractions.
Parking
Given the city’s Limited Traffic Zones and few parking spots, it is best to avoid driving within Bologna itself. Instead, park along the city’s perimeter, take public transport inside its limits and drive to neighbouring attractions.

Bolognese Apennines
Boarding the southernmost part of Bologna, separating the city from the region of Tuscany is Italy’s backbone, the Apennine Mountains. The range, in its entirety, stretches from the North of Italy, all the way down the peninsula to Sicily. By car from Bologna, however, you can reach the mountains in around an one and a half hours.
Here, you can take a mountainous walk through cultivated fields and natural woodland. Both historic and modern villages are scattered throughout the nearby mountains, which provide good resting places on a long trek. There are also historic clues in this area of the Gothic Line – a defensive line built by the Germans in WWII.
