Despite its fame as the birthplace of
Mother Teresa, Skopje remains under the tourist radar.

Split in half by the River Vardar, Macedonia’s capital is part old-world bazaar and part
modern development. The Balkan city has been undergoing an urban renewal for some years and
scattered throughout its old Byzantine and Ottoman architecture, you’ll find glitzy
buildings and opulent monuments.

Though Skopje’s cityscape appears to be facing an identity crisis, its
cultural mix of Orthodox Christian and Muslim have well-established roots. Just as the city
provides constantly unexpected sights, so does the surrounding landscape. Take a drive to
Vodno Mountain for views of the city or to the nearby pure blue lake of Kozjak Dam.

Sights to see

Founded in the 2nd Century B.C. Skopje is an intriguing mix of old and new towns. A 15th
century stone bridge over the Vardar river links both the old and new towns allowing you to
explore both with ease. The new town is a thriving modern city with around 650,00 citizens,
it is the political centre of Macedonia and a trading centre for the surrounding region. The
old town has managed to preserve the essence of its original architecture, and provides a
wealth of interesting sights including the Kale Fortress, Daud Pasha’s Turkish baths (now an
art gallery) and Mustafa Pasha’s mosque.

Skopje: Discover more

Skopje was hit by a massive earthquake in 1963, fortunately most of the ancient architecture
survived. Amongst some of the sights are the orthodox churches of Saint Dimitrij and Saint
Kliment, an example of the more contemporary architecture of Skopje but well worth a visit.
