Bonaire is an island escape that begs to be discovered – both above and below the surface.
The second largest island within the Dutch Caribbean, Bonaire is renowned for its stunning blue-green waters and pristine coral reef, which has even been designated a national park. For the best snorkelling in the Caribbean, this is the place to be.
Due to its low-key profile on the tourist map and the local dedication to maintaining its landscape, it has remained remarkably unspoilt and a eco-friendly destination. But the island’s dry land shouldn’t be forgotten either. It varied terrain includes desert-like plains, salt flats (and salt pyramids), volcanic rocks, and stunning beaches. Although drives around the island are not particularly long, they are the most intriguing way to explore Bonaire’s history and nature.
Sights to see
If you like to sit back and relax on holiday Bonaire has many beautiful beaches and an exquisitely sunny climate for you to enjoy. But most people come to Bonaire for its huge array of activities. There is kayaking, sailing and windsurfing to be had, but most come for the excellent scuba diving and snorkelling as the waters off the Bonaire’s coast have been declared a marine park with pristine reefs and diverse marine life. But if you prefer your pursuits to be a little dryer you could also go bird watching, cycling or take a nature tour. Bonaire is a main breeding ground for Flamingo’s and it is alleged more flamingos live on the island than humans!
