Transfagarasan Highway
The Transfagarasan Highway is an epic adventure, but be warned, it is not for the timid driver or anyone scared of heights. A motor enthusiast’s dream drive, the highway reached international fame thanks to its 90km of hairpin turns and steep descents. It was also touted as the best road in the world by Top Gear.
The road connects the historic cities of Transylvania, starting near the village of Bascov and running to the town of Sibiu. Originally built in response to the 1968 invasion by Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union, this strategic mountain pass winds its way through the Fagaras Mountains, climbing to heights of over 2 kilometres. The area is also rich with spectacular scenery and wildlife.
