Hire a car in Romania
If you’re up for a challenge, Romania will reward you with some of Europe’s best kept secrets.
Rich in folk culture (beyond gypsies and Dracula), Saxon villages and mountainous scenery, Romania is an astonishingly fantasy-like country. Its rural villages are just as intriguing as its culturally rich main cities and its landscape is a wellspring of striking natural beauty.
The most liberating way to tour the country is by car, as public transport is on the slower side and doesn’t extend into the rural areas.

Romania driving tips
Road conditions
Road quality in Romania is low, but don’t let that discourage you. Just drive carefully to steer clear of any obstacles.
Traffic rules
Romanian traffic laws are very strict, and traffic police have the authority to confiscate any form of driver’s licence or give on the spot fines.
Winter driving
From December to March, you may find mountain roads covered in ice and snow. During these months, main roads are cleared but smaller roads may be closed.
Road sharing
In rural and mountainous areas, expect to share the road with pedestrians, cyclists, livestock and horse-drawn carts. Be attentive and avoid driving in these areas at night.

Transfagarasan Highway
The Transfagarasan Highway is an epic adventure, but be warned, it is not for the timid driver or anyone scared of heights. A motor enthusiast’s dream drive, the highway reached international fame thanks to its 90km of hairpin turns and steep descents. It was also touted as the best road in the world by Top Gear.
The road connects the historic cities of Transylvania, starting near the village of Bascov and running to the town of Sibiu. Originally built in response to the 1968 invasion by Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union, this strategic mountain pass winds its way through the Fagaras Mountains, climbing to heights of over 2 kilometres. The area is also rich with spectacular scenery and wildlife.
