Driving tips
What’s it like to drive in Gran Canaria?
Main roads are well-signposted, lined with crash barriers and smooth. Certain routes can get busy during peak season, so depending on the time of year you’re travelling, it is possible to hit rush hour traffic.
Mountain roads
Expect some dizzying bends and roads that snake through the elevated terrain. As the roads are narrow, use the pull-over spots when necessary to let other drivers pass. Cyclists are also a frequent sight on these roads, so watch out when driving around corners.
Tolls
There’s a few small toll roads on the island, but as a tourist, sticking to the scenic route is a better option.
Gran Canaria car hire facts
One of the easiest ways to save money on your car hire is knowing what time of year renting is cheapest. But if you must rent during peak season (when prices are usually higher) be sure to book well in advance as car hire companies often run low on vehicle choice.

Northern greenery
Need a break from the sandy shores? Gran Canaria has plenty of leafy areas where you can retreat from the sun’s heat.
Tamadaba Natural Park is one of the best preserved pine forests on the island. It is a great place for bird watchers, as the park is a favourite hideaway for a variety of birds who nest in the trees.
Hiking here is an obvious pastime, and from La Bandera peak you can see the entirety of the forest. For those wishing to stay under the canopy of greenery a little longer, there is a camping site in the park.
Mountainous interior
A constant surprise to visitors is the rugged centre of Gran Canaria. Its tall mountains are awe-inspiring and the roads through this area are some of the most scenic on the island.
Of the island’s most impressive natural monuments is Roque Nublo, also known as Cloud Rock. One of the biggest crags in the world, its size can be truly startling. As you hike up along the mountain ridges, you’ll be awarded with views over Tejeda and the surrounding deep-dipping valleys and rough peaks.
Southern desert
As expected, this little island has plenty of cascading beaches that entice visitors from around the world. But on its southern shore is an unusual and wild landscape.
Maspalomas Desert is a massive expanse of undulating sand dunes. It is here that you will get a sense of how close the island is to North Africa, as the Maspalomas dunes appear as if they slipped away from the Sahara Desert. At the edge of the dunes is Playa de Maspalomas, possibly the most spectacular beach on the island – an icon of Gran Canaria.
