Hire a car in Mallorca
The largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca promises big resorts and quiet hideaways.
With an abundance of sun and sand, it’s no surprise that the island attracts millions of tourists each year, making it one of Europe’s top destinations. Although most of the island’s beaches are crowded with hotels, there are less tourist-oriented hangouts. Mallorca’s capital, Palma, and inland villages show off the more traditional Mediterranean side of the island.

Scenic road trip
The west coast
The beach isn’t the only place in Mallorca to gaze upon glorious Mediterranean views. The island’s West Coast may lack long stretches of white sand but it is home to some of the most sensational drives.
Between Andratx to Soller runs the M10, a scenic adrenaline-pumping road, which has become a favourite route amongst drivers and cyclists. The coastal drive ascends and descends through the UNESCO listed Tramuntana Mountain range and carefully poised olive and almond groves. Here, dramatically sculpted cliffs and green forests meet the blue sea, providing sublime views. Given the rigorous twists and turns of the road, short distances can take far longer than expected but it’s well worth taking your time.
If you’re seeking a little extra challenge, continue driving along the M10 to the Formentor Peninsula, the northernmost point on the island. Be warned, this section requires some amount of bravery to drive!

Top Mallorcan sights
Best beach: Sa Calobra
This remote beach is one of the island’s little treasures. Half pebble and half sand, it’s an unusual but entertaining beach.
While Sa Calobra itself is gratifying, it’s the road you must drive down to get to the beach that makes it a true gem. The narrow steep road is undoubtedly hair-raising but the vistas are some of the best.
Unusual landscapes: Cuevas del Drach
If you choose to enjoy one really touristy site in Mallorca, consider a tour through the Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves). Located in the pretty harbour of Porto Cristo, these limestone caves with their ceilings dripping in stalactites are eerie, yet, astonishing. Within this network of caves you will also find Europe’s largest underground lake.
Picturesque village: Deià
This village on the West Coast of Mallorca is deemed to be so lovely, it has helped inspired a variety of artists and writers over the years. Despite its popularity amongst the famous, you won’t find any hotel chains here – and there’s only a small scattering of foreigners wandering its steep narrow streets. Deià has managed to hold onto its traditional charm.
