Driving tips
Necessary items: You must carry a warning triangle in your car, as well as antifreeze, windscreen fluid and a shovel. Ask your rental company if they provide these items.
Headlights: It is mandatory to have your dipped headlights on throughout the day all year round.
Winter driving: Temperatures dip below zero in the winters and the roads can become slippery with snow and ice. You must have winter tyres installed from December to March – your rental company will provide this, but may charge an additional “winterization fee”.
Alcohol limits: Sweden has some of the strictest drinking and driving laws in Europe. The limit is 20mg versus the UK’s 80mg, and there are heavy penalties and fines.
The “Swedish mile”: If you hear anyone referring to this, they are actually talking about a distance of 10 km, not one mile!
Roads: The roads are rarely congested but watch out for wildlife, including moose!

Make the most of Sweden
The southwest coast:
If you’re seeking a nature-based road trip, Sweden’s west coast is the place to go. Dalsland is one of the country’s great wilderness region. Stop at the fishing villages which line the coast, or island hop around the Bohuslän archipelago on a kayak. After filling up on your sense of outdoor adventure, head further south to Gothenburg. The bustling city’s creative culinary scene will tempt your palate with nouveau Scandinavian flavours.
Skåne:
The southernmost province of Sweden, Skåne is a land of diversity. One of the must see pit stops within the region is the Ales Stones, “Sweden’s Stonehenge”, where 59 boulders are carefully arranged in the outline of a ship. There are a scattering of medieval manors to discover as well. From Malmö – the province’s largest city – you can also drive 20 minutes across the Öresund Bridge (made famous by the television series The Bridge) to the capital of Denmark.
Uppland:
For a northern Swedish road trip, head just beyond Stockholm to the province of Uppland. Travel in the footsteps of the Vikings and learn about Sweden’s long history. You’ll find cultural treasures, such as Wik Castle, and open-air museums to take you back in time. Investigate the inland forests, which famous scientist Carl Linnaeus once studied then drive to the Roslagen archipelago, and explore the charming villages. In the city of Uppsala, you’ll find the Nordic region’s oldest university.
