Despite its position between London and Canterbury, Rochester still manages to assert its historic authority.Sitting on the River Medway, Rochester’s significance began to unfold during the Roman era. Later, the Normans built Rochester Castle on the former site of a Roman fortification and afterwards a magnificent cathedral was built – England’s second-oldest cathedral.

Ightham Mote
Ightham has that quintessential sense of English countryside tranquility. Built 700 years ago, the country house has passed through hands of medieval knights and wealthy Victorians. The unique 14th-century moated manor house features a Great Hall and Tudor painted ceiling. But its most beautiful highlights are found outside. Peaceful gardens, an orchard, ornamental ponds and tree lines walks throughout the property are a scenic reflection of history. For an especially picturesque tour, visit during the spring to see the ancient bluebell woodland at Scathes Wood. Set in the greenery of Sevenoaks, Ightham is just over a half an hour’s drive from Rochester. From the train station, a taxi is needed to reach the estate, making driving the cheapest and easiest option. The car park is 200 yards from the house – it’s free for National Trust members and £2 for non-members.
