Paycocke’s House
Paycock was built around 1500, during the time Henry VIII came to power. The half-timber framed merchants house is an impressive masterpiece of Tudor architecture. Its uncommonly intricate carved woodwork and panelling displays the wealth of the cloth trade in Essex at the time. You must look up at the wooden beams to fully appreciate the house’s grandeur. It was built for Thomas Paycocke, whose initials (along with his wife’s), you can find engraved throughout the house. Centuries later it was saved from demolition, with its interiors restored and tudor-style furnishings designed to match the house, recreating an authentic period-home. Paycocke’s House is less than a half an hour’s drive from Chelmsford, 400 yards from the centre of Coggeshall. The closest parking is at the medieval Coggeshall Grange Barn, which is also worth a visit.
